The Small Business Development Center is bringing the popular Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market to the Buffalo State campus during the winter months. The new winter market, which is open to the public, is presented in partnership with the Elmwood Village Association.
Featuring 15 to 20 vendors each week, the market will be held in Buckham Hall on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from December 5 through April 30. The market will be closed on December 26 and January 2 for the holidays.
Buckham Hall is conveniently located on Rockwell Road near Grant Street. Free parking will be available on campus during market hours (campus map).
"Buffalo State is very excited about hosting the winter farmers’ market," said Susan A. McCartney, director of the Small Business Development Center and special adviser to the provost for economic development. "The market represents an exceptional economic eco-system: local, sustainable, and entrepreneurial. Further, the winter market will benefit our campus constituents, our neighbors, and our community. Plus, our residential students are going to love it!”
The Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market is a producer-only market. All products sold at the market are produced within the eight counties of Western New York. All goods are grown or prepared from scratch by the vendors; no reselling is permitted. Vendors apply to sell goods at the market and are selected through a competitive process, with preference given to farms that practice organic and/or sustainable agricultural methods.
"We are extremely excited to have found a nearby location to accommodate our vendors, and we now look forward to serving our loyal customers year-round thanks to our new winter location," said Stewart Ritchie, president of the Elmwood-Bidwell Farmers Market board of directors.
"Access to fresh fruits and vegetables and locally made food and beverages is both an asset to residents and a wonderful way to support and foster our local farmers and small businesses," said Carly Battin, executive director of the Elmwood Village Association. "We're very pleased and thankful that Buffalo State is opening up their campus to provide this neighborhood amenity, and hope that this market continues to strengthen the bond between the campus and the surrounding community."
The market will return to its spring-summer-fall location at the intersection of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway in Buffalo’s historic Elmwood Village, on May 7, 2016.
